Week of October 1st, 2018

, Room 404 Families.  
Announcements: 
--It's Garden Week!
--Book Fair: October 9th-12th.  We will be visiting on Tuesday the 9th.
--Please check and sign your child's homework agenda before Friday.
--We visit the library on Mondays.  Please remind your child to bring your library book back to school on Mondays. (If we miss our library time due to no school on a Monday, we will make up the time on a later date that week.) 
--We have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays.  Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate clothing and footwear.
 --Our next flag salute will be on September 28th.


Below is a list of the standards and activities we will be working on throughout the week:

Reading: 
This week we will finish our Benchmark curriculum about characters, and how they shape a story.  Throughout this week we will be practicing the following comprehension skills:
-Identifying the key details of a text and summarizing
-Analyzing how illustrations convey mood and character
-Analyzing Characters
-Comparing and contrasting stories

We will also be working on the grammar skill of writing complex sentences using subordinate conjunctions (because, although, if, when, while before, after, etc.) and compound sentences using coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

Writing:
We are in our second unit of writing, narrative.  The students will be revising and editing their fables that they drafted last week.  The focus of this unit will be for the students to write sequential stories and used descriptive details to describe their characters and their actions.

Math:
In math, we are reviewing our first unit, which includes:
-Place Value
-Addition Strategies
-Subtraction Strategies
-Line, Bar, and Picture Graphs

-Reviewing fables, myths, and folktales
-Identifying and analyzing nonliteral language
-Analyzing Character Traits
-Comparing and contrasting stories

We will also be working on the grammar skill of writing simple and complex sentences using coordinating conjunctions (because, although, if, when, while before, after, etc.)

Writing:
We are in our second unit of writing, narrative.  The students will begin drafting the fables that they planned last week.  The focus of this unit will be for the students to write sequential stories and used descriptive details to describe their characters and their actions.

Math:
In math, we are working on understanding and creating data tables and graphs. We will work on building our understanding of:
-Data tables
-Picture graphs
-Bar graphs
-Line graphs 
-Solving problems involving graphs

Social Studies:  
Last week we didn't get enough time to finish up their Google Slides presentation (like PowerPoint) about the four natural regions in California, so they will continue to build those.  Ask your child to show you their project when it is finished!

Below is a list of the standards and activities we will be working on throughout the week:

Reading: 
This week we will start our Benchmark curriculum about characters, and how they shape a story.  Throughout this week we will be practicing the following comprehension skills:
-Identifying the key details of a text and summarizing
-Identifying fables, myths, and folktales
-Analyzing characters and character traits
-Read and respond to Poetry
-Figurative language: Similies

We will also be working on the grammar skill of understanding adjectives and adverbs. In addition, the students will practice using and punctuating dialogue in a text.

Writing:
We are starting our second unit of writing, narrative.  The students will be asked to write their own fable that teaches the moral of selfishness.  The focus of this unit will be for the students to write sequential stories and used descriptive details to describe their characters and their actions.

Math:
In math, we are working on subtraction strategies. We will work on building our understanding of the following strategies:
-Using a number line for subtraction
-Decomposing with subtraction
-Standard Algorithm (with the proficiency of the above strategies)
-Mathematical Reasoning (word problems).

Understanding each of these strategies will help the students be flexible with their number sense and subtraction skills.

Social Studies:  
This week the students are finishing up their Google Slides presentation (like PowerPoint) about the four natural regions in California.  Ask your child to show you their project when it is finished!

Week of September 10th, 2018

, Room 404 Families.  The school year is now in full swing.  The students now know the rules and procedures of the classroom, as well as the routines of each academic block of our day.  They understand my expectations, and I am confident each and every one of them will meet my expectations and that this will be an outstanding year. 

Announcements: 
--Scholastic book order is due by Thursday the 13th.  If possible, please order online using the class code H7VP9.  Use the promo READS to get a free $5 book (if you spend $25).

--Please check and sign your child's homework agenda before Friday.

--We visit the library on Mondays.  Please remind your child to bring your library book back to school on Mondays. (If we miss our library time due to no school on a Monday, we will make up the time on a later date that week.)

This week we will be finishing the first unit of our Benchmark curriculum about citizen's rights.  Throughout this week we will be practicing the following comprehension skills:
-Identifying the main idea and supporting details of a text
-Identifying text features if an informational text
-Analyzing sequential text connections
-Comparing and contrasting two texts

We will also be working on the grammar skill of understanding the subject and predicate. 

Writing:
We are finishing our first unit of writing for informative/explanatory writing.  By the end of the week, the students will have written an informative paragraph (or essay) about actions people have taken to earn the right to vote.

Math:
In math, we are working on addition strategies. We will work on building our understanding of the following strategies:
-Using a number line
-Decomposing
-Branching
-Partial Sums
-Standard Algorithm
Understanding each of these strategies will help the students be flexible with their number sense and addition skills.

Social Studies:  
This week we will continue learning about our local geography in California.  Ask your child what they have learned about California's geography so far!

--We visit the library on Mondays.  Please remind your child to bring your library book back to school on Mondays. If we miss our library time due to no school on a Monday, we will make up the time on a later date that week.

This week we have a lot to accomplish in one less day.  Below is a list of the standards and activities we will be working on throughout the week:

Reading: 
We will be reading from our Benchmark curriculum about citizen's rights.  Throughout this curriculum we will be practicing the following comprehension skills:
-Identifying Key Details and Summarizing
-Citing text when answer questions
-Analyzing Cause and Effect
-Drawing inferences

We will also be working on the grammar skill of understanding the past, present, and future verb tenses.

Writing:
We are continuing to review informative writing.  By the end of next week, the students will have written an informative paragraph (or essay) about actions people have taken to earn the right to vote.

Math:
In math, we are working on rounding.  We are building our understanding of what rounding is, why we do it, and how to round to the tens and hundreds place.  This week the students will have math homework due by Friday.

Social Studies:  
This week we will begin learning about our local geography in California.
