Principal's Newsletter 9/5/2022

Dear San Elijo Elementary Families,

We hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend and finding ways to stay cool! Students have been doing well with the heat and staying indoors when needed. Due to the heat wave lasting for several more days, we continue to offer cool-down zones for students and switch to full indoor recess when the heat becomes unbearable. Please encourage your children to hydrate as much as possible, bring a refillable water bottle, and wear light clothing.

School Board Meeting

Our SMUSD School Board has asked us to do a short presentation about our school at the meeting this Thursday, September 8. We would love it if you could attend or watch from home!

Here is the information I found on the SMUSD homepage for the meeting-

Location: North County Regional Educational Center, 255 Pico Avenue, San Marcos, CA, 92069

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Live Streaming for this meeting will be available for viewers at the link below:

Drama class starts this week with Mrs. Broyles!

This week will settle into our full “Specials” schedule with students attending Drama, STEM, and Art classes every other week and PE, Music, and Library every week. We love offering many opportunities where students can extend their learning from the classroom, pursue their passions and interests, and enrich their love of learning and exploration! Big thanks to the PTO and ALL of our parents for your generous support for our fundraising campaigns, which support these classes.

Cash For Kids Drive Starts this Week!

The SEES PTO hopes you have had a great start to the 2022-2023 school year! To kick things off, the month of September is dedicated to our most important fundraiser, the Cash for Kids Fundraising Drive. This is the only fundraiser where 100% of your donation goes directly to the PTO, allowing us to have STEM, Art, and Drama teachers, instructional aides, and so much more. The goal is to raise $40,000 this month! To donate online, click here. And be on the lookout for flyers being distributed this week with more information about the Cash for Kids campaign, as well as donation prizes, including SEES hats, yearbooks, plushies, and more! Questions? Email [email protected].

School Site Council Ballot- Please Vote!

The School Site Council is an elected group of parents and staff who serve as an advisory group to the Principal. The primary function of this group is to provide information and advice on the Single Plan for Student Achievement and the School Safety Plan and to review budgetary information. This committee does not deal with fundraising or other areas covered by the PTO. We have three positions to fill on the school site council this year and are so thankful to all of the parents who graciously submitted their names and bios last week. Now we need all of our parents to vote! Please complete the ballot below by marking three candidates. We will keep the voting open until Saturday, September 10. Thank you!

Birthday Celebrations

As a reminder, no outside food (candy, cupcakes, cookies, etc.) is allowed to be distributed to students for birthday celebrations. If you’d like to have your child bring birthday goodie bags for their classmates, stickers, pencils, small toys, and other non-food items are excellent alternatives to food. We mainly don’t allow food due to severe food allergies and unhealthy ingredients such as excessive sugar. Class celebrations may be organized by your child’s room parent or for fundraiser incentives, but these celebrations will be limited and follow the SMUSD Smart Snack Guide: As you can imagine, if we allow food for one child’s birthday, then we would need to allow it for all 24-33 students in the class, and that would be many days of unhealthy eating in school! Thank you so much for your support in this! We would hate to ruin someone’s plans for their special day, so please non-food items only for birthdays.

Yearbook Cover Contest Reminder

Once again, SEES students will be the official artists of our school yearbook! All submissions must be received by September 26th, 2022!

San Elijo Elementary’s 2022-2023 yearbook theme celebrates our student’s dreams and aspirations. This year, we are asking students to draw their hopes and dreams for the future.

Every child’s submissions will be included in the yearbook.

Please use a WHITE 8.5  x 11 sheet of paper for each drawing. Paper orientation must be vertical. Try to use as much of the paper as possible. The bigger, the better!

No wording (the yearbook team will insert the school name and the year)

Draw and color your artwork with any medium you like (pencils, pens, crayons, markers).

The student’s name, grade, and teacher’s name MUST be written on the back of the paper in pencil only so it does not show through the artwork on the front.

Entries should be placed in the YEARBOOK folder in the office

Have fun and good luck!

Below is an important update from the District-

COVID Update:

Parents/guardians no longer need to submit a negative test result in order for a student to end isolation before Day 11.

·  If a student is experiencing symptoms, they may return to school as soon as the following day if they are feeling better without providing proof of a negative test (testing is expected, but proof is not required). Contact the school health office to request a free at-home test kit.

·  Students who test positive for COVID may return to school on Day 6 without providing proof of a negative test. Antigen testing is strongly recommended. If your child is still testing positive on Days 6-10, please keep them home.

Updated notification procedure after a positive case is reported on campus:

In line with CDPH recommendations, we will notify groups/classrooms who are experiencing a higher than normal case rate (3 or more positive cases have been reported within a 14-day period).

In addition to weekly emails, we communicate short reminders, updates, and announcements to parents via the app. It is set up for text messages but downloading the app is recommended. This is optional since messaging rates may apply, and you may not want to receive frequent messages from me. Please click on the appropriate link below-
