Dear SEES Families,

Thank you so much for the incredible feedback you provided for us on our LCAP survey.  I’d like to address some initial questions that were presented with the survey, especially with respect to tier 1 curriculum and instruction.  In San Marcos Unified, we are focused on five blocks of English language arts instruction: word study, whole group reading, small group reading, designated ELD, and writing.  In math, we are focused on four blocks of instruction: number routines, problem solving, digital learning, and aligned investigations.

California adopted a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) which provides a basis for understanding how California educators can work together to ensure equitable access and opportunity for all students to achieve the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). MTSS includes Response to Instruction and Intervention.  Currently, some of our teachers are participating in a district-wide math adoption pilot, so we will have a new math curriculum next year. Our tier 1 curriculum for English language arts is Benchmark Advance. Benchmark Advance is vertically aligned to build learning connections for students, which means that no matter what grade level they are in, they are all working within the same knowledge strand.  For example, all students just completed unit 1 on Government and Citizenship, and now are all working on unit 2 on Character. In kindergarten they are focusing on how we learn about people, and in 5th grade they are learning about how people can inspire and change us. Each year the units build in depth and complexity, while also connecting to prior knowledge. The core student books are light and manageable, magazine-like texts.  These books are designed for students to interact with the reading by writing on the page and annotating the text. Each book is used for 3 weeks, so be on the lookout for it coming home with annotations. These annotations will give you some insight on how your student is interpreting and engaging with the readings. Throughout the year, our students are going to be learning 10 knowledge strands: Government and Citizenship, Character, Life Science, Point of View, Technology and Society, Theme, History and Culture, Earth Science, Economics, and Physical Science.

I would also like to invite you to join me for our first Coffee with the Principal of the year.  It will be on Friday, September 27th, following Flag Salute.  If you have time to stay, I look forward to hearing additional feedback from you in the cafeteria!

PTO

SEES PTO hopes you have had a great start to the 2019-2020 school year. We are excited for the year ahead and have many fun events planned. To kick it off, the month of September is dedicated to our most important fundraiser, the Cash for Kids Fund Drive.

SEES PTO provides support to our school with over $140,000 annually. The majority of these funds are raised through several fundraisers throughout the year: Cash for Kids, Apex Fun Run, Teacher Experiences, and the Country Fair. Each fundraiser has a goal, but Cash for Kids is the only fundraiser where 100% of your donation goes directly to the PTO to support enrichment which is why it’s the most significant to us.

The money raised during the Cash for Kids Fund Drive supplements our children’s core educational programs. It allows SEES staff to provide a more comprehensive education in Science, Technology, Art, and PE while also supporting our dedicated teachers. We know that providing these various opportunities gives our students a richer educational experience. We also know that schools in our district and across the country are cutting these

programs due to lack of funding.

Fortunately, with your donation, the SEES PTO will help fund programs that are NOT funded by your taxes, the district, or the state. These include:

● Drama instructor and program

● Science instructor and program

● Art instructor and program

● Athletics, PE, and recess equipment

● Classroom supplies

● Accelerated Reader

● Makerspace

● SEES News

● AND MORE!

These programs are vital to our children’s growth into successful learners and future leaders! Your generous contribution will ensure our children continue to receive a superior education. While we have suggested donations amounts, every dollar helps support our school. The goal is to have all families participate at a level they are comfortable with. Thank you for your gift and allowing all of our students to SOAR!
