About Me

Hi! My name is Yelena Smithson (please call me Leena) and I am the School Social Worker at both Discovery and San Elijo Elementary in San Marcos Unified School District. This is my fourth year as a school social worker in our district. I graduated from San Diego State University in 2010 with an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a minor in Counseling and Social Change. I received my Masters in Social Work (MSW) degree in 2013 from San Diego State University with a concentration on Child Welfare and School Social Work. As an Associate Clinical Social Worker “ASW” I am receiving weekly supervision and consultation from a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in order to provide the most ethically and legally sound practices to our school and working toward obtaining my license.

I really enjoy working as a school social worker because it gives me the opportunity to combine my passion of education and social work. I think having school social workers is valuable because children spend most of their time at school, so there is a unique opportunity to be able to do preventive work on a larger scale as well as provide mental health services to students who may not be able to receive them outside of the school setting.

I work with students, families, and community members on many different levels, from individuals to the entire school.

In my personal time, I enjoy hiking, traveling, swimming/relaxing at the beach, listening to music, and spending time with friends and family and my 3 awesome dogs. sw2 Our amazing San Marcos Unified School Social Work Team!
