Welcome to room 205! First grade is a time of growth through exploration and critical thinking. The joy of seeing students develop in knowledge is my favorite part of being a teacher! Together as a team, we will further your child’s goal into becoming a lifelong learner. I can’t wait to meet everyone! :)

A Successful First DayCartoon Kids.png Please read the following in preparation for the first day of school.

School Begins: Tuesday, August 21st at 8:45 What to Bring: Backpack, Lunch or Lunch Money, Snack, and a Water Bottle ->only water inside please :) juice or anything sweet can attract ants into our room. I would recommend marking all items clearly with your child's name, as they are often similar to others

A Successful Morning: Please bring your student to our classroom no earlier than 8:30am. Have your student practice hanging up his/her backpack on the outside hooks. Walk your student into the classroom. Help them find their desk and put their nametag on. Once the bell rings, students may remain seated at their desk. Give them a great big hug and remind them that you're very proud.
Lunch and Recess: For most of our little ones, recess is a new concept. In Kindergarten, students only have one time to eat. Before, the first day of school, talk with your student about the difference between lunch and recess. ("Lunch is a longer period of time where you eat most of what is in your lunchbox and recess is a shorter period of time where you eat a snack). Tell your child that you will draw a "happy face" on the snack that is supposed to be brought out to recess. **Over the last couple of years, I noticed that many first graders ended up eating their entire lunch and not  saving a snack for recess. Placing a happy face on their snack will remind them of your conversation and will help them feel successful.

Lunch is 11:00- 11:45am. If you would like your child to buy a lunch please stop by the cafeteria to set up an account or set up an account online: https://www.smusd.org/cms/one.aspx?portalId=157433&pageId=328778
Later in the day, children will have recess from 1:10- 1:30pm, so again you may want to send an additional snack. :)

Dismissal/ Parent Pick Up: Parent pick up can be a bit crazy, so please arrive early. School ends at 3:10 everyday, except Wednesdays (2:10).

*Students will be ready to be picked up in the 1st grade zone located at the rolling gates. The rolling gates are located in front of the school on the right. Please make eye contact with me before taking your student & having them hand me their exit ticket.

*KOC will walk as a group with the KOC leaders.

Back to School Night/ Mark your Calendars!: Please plan to attend our First Grade Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 28th from  5:30-6:15pm. The presentation will take place in our classroom (205). I will be sharing lots of important information about policies, procedures, & curriculum. This evening is for parents and teachers only, no students or siblings please. I look forward to meeting with you then!

The transition from Kindergarten to First Grade will take some time. Students will have to adjust to a longer day, eating lunch & a snack at school, playing on the big playground, going to PE, and working independently. Therefore, always remember to get a good night's rest, and I can't wait to meet all of you on our first day of school!
Thank you, Mrs. Miller
