First Day of School

A Successful First DaySchool photo

The transition from kindergarten to first grade will take some time. Students will have to adjust to a longer day, eating lunch at school, playing on the big playground, going to P.E. and working independently. Before the first day of school, have a conversation with your child about these changes. For example: The difference between lunch and recess. (“Lunch is a longer period of time where you eat most of what is in your lunchbox and recess is a short period of time where you eat a snack.")

School Begins: Tuesday, August 21st at 8:45

What to Bring:  Backpack, Snack, Lunch or Lunch Money, and a Water Bottle. I would recommend marking all items clearly with your child's name, as they are often similar to others.

A Successful Morning
Please bring your student to our classroom around 8:30am. Have your student practice hanging up his/her backpack on the outside hooks. Walk your student into the classroom. Help them find their desk and put their nametag on. Once the bell rings, walk your student out to help him/her line up outside the classroom. Give them a great big hug and remind them that you're very proud! Once I walk out to the line, please help your student gain independence by saying your final goodbyes.

Recess and Lunch
Lunch is at 11:00 a.m.  If you would like your child to buy lunch please stop by the cafeteria to set up an account or set up an account online:

Besides lunch, the children will have a recess from 1:10 -1:30, so you may want to send an additional snack. It is a good idea to label the snack that is suppose to be brought out for recess so that your child knows which one is for snack recess and which one is for lunch time.

(*Last year, I noticed that many first graders ended up eating their entire lunch and not saving a snack for recess. Placing a happy face on their snack will remind them of your conversation and will help your student feel successful on the first couple days of school.)

Dismissal/Parent Pick Up
Parent pick up can be a bit busy and crowded, so please arrive early. School ends at 3:10 every day except Wednesdays (2:10)
* Students will be ready to be picked up in the 1st grade zone located at the rolling gates. The rolling gates are located in front of the school on the right. Please make eye contact with me before taking your student. Your child will need to give me a high five before leaving the line to join you outside of the gate.

* K.O.C will walk as a group with the K.O.C leaders.

Back to School Night/Mark your Calendars!
Please plan to attend our First Grade Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 28th from 5:30-6:15 p.m.  The presentation will take place in our classroom (204). I will be sharing lots of important information about our wonderful first grade classroom. This evening is for parents and teachers only, no students or siblings please. I look forward to meeting with you then!

 Thank you, Miss Cantu
