All About Mr. Gidner

  • Who is Mr. Gidner?

I grew up here in San Marcos and attended elementary through high school in this school district.  I started at Woodland Park Elementary, then on to San Marcos Middle School, and finally graduating from San Marcos High School in 1994.  I feel a special bond with this school district because I have spent so many years involved in it as a student and now an educator. After graduating from San Marcos High School, I attended San Diego State University.  Go State!!!!  I entered as a Liberal Studies major and graduated four years later ( I can't believe it either!) with a Bachelors in Liberal Studies with and emphasis in education.  My secondary emphasis was in psychology which at the time I planned to turn into a future job opportunity.  Well, I changed my mind and decided to get my teacher credential right away.  I obtained that credential in 1999 from SDSU. I was hired soon after that in San Marcos Unified.

My first job was at Knob Hill Elementary teaching kindergarten.  I spent four years in kindergarten and then decided to make a grade level change to first grade.  I taught 1st grade for three years and then wanted to see how the other side of the school worked.  So I taught 4th grade for 1 year and then transferred to San Elijo.I have taught Kindergarten, 2nd grade, and 4th grade here at SEES.  This year will be my 25th year in education!
  • When I am not in the classroom on Thursday and Friday, I am working through our local teacher's association representing the teachers of San Marcos Unified.

My family and I live here in San Elijo, as well.  We have lived here for almost 14 years  now and absolutely love it!  You can always see us taking walks and going to the community events.  My wife Janet is a 3rd grade teacher at Carrillo Elementary in San Marcos as well.  We have two children...Addison and Nolan.  Addison is going into 11th Grade at SMHS!  Nolan is starting his first year at SEMS.  We are very blessed to have two wonderful children!

Both Addison and Nolan have Type 1 diabetes.  Addison was diagnosed when she was 15 months old.  Nolan was just diagnosed in March 2013.  This horrible disease is a constant in our lives...checking blood sugars, giving insulin, watching and caring for both our children who need constant support.  If you would like to learn more about this disease, please click on the link below: http://www.jdrf.com

Outside of school, I am a huge sports junkie!  I love playing sports as well as watching them.  Since I have lived in San Diego my whole life, I was a Chargers fan.  Now that they moved to LA...they are no longer part of my football life.  Our house, thanks to my sons influence, are now Green Bay Packers fans!  Go Pack!!!  We are also San Diego Padres and San Diego State Aztecs fans!  We have been to a few baseball games this year as well!  I have season tickets to SDSU basketball and we hope to make it to a few football games this year as well.
  • This school year, I have set goals for me as a teacher and goals for my students.  Together, with hard work and perseverance, we can accomplish them!
